With her bold personality, viral TikToks and unstoppable drive on the rugby pitch, Ilona Maher is redefining what it means to be a modern athlete.
Born and raised in Burlington, Vermont, Ilona Maher was encouraged by her parents to play sports. Throughout her childhood, she spent a lot of time playing field hockey, basketball and softball. While these sports were fun, they were not the perfect fit.
At the age of 17, Ilona became inspired by her dad who had a background in rugby. She decided to give it a try and realized this sport was in fact, the perfect fit.
Maher started playing rugby at the collegiate level. She first attended Norwich University, and later transferred to Quinnipiac University, studying nursing. As a rugby player, her power, athleticism and leadership set her apart from others. She helped her team capture three consecutive National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) championships. The rugby superstar was successful on the field and in academics, completing her bachelor’s degree in nursing.
After graduating college, Ilona Maher earned a spot on the U.S. Women’s Rugby Sevens National Team. She made her Olympic debut in 2021 at the Tokyo Games, gaining a large fan base for her on-field play, and hilarious off-field social media videos. A few years later at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Maher and Team USA made history. The team took home the bronze medal, making this a huge moment for American women’s rugby. Maher’s combination of skill, strength, and charisma made her one of the most recognized athletes in the Olympic games.
Off the field, Maher has become a leader for female empowerment. Her Instagram and TikTok posts are filled with humor, encouragement and authenticity. She is very open with being confident and encouraging others to value their self-worth.
By being bold and unapologetically herself, Ilona Maher has helped redefine what it means to be a role model in women’s sports. She proves that toughness and femininity go hand in hand.
For Ilona Maher, success is not just about winning medals, but about representation. The rugby star looks to grow the sport in the United States and inspire others to play as well. Whether she’s competing, creating content or mentoring players, her goal is clear: to show that confidence is contagious and being yourself is your greatest power.
