A timeline of how our favorite hockey team came to be and the milestones they’ve hit ahead of this season!
The PWHL regular season is just around the corner, with the Boston Fleet’s home opener coming up on Nov. 23. This may only be the third season of the league, but a lot has gone into the creation and execution of the Boston Fleet. The Fleet has risen as a competitive force in New England sports, and their identity is a reflection of the journey that has gotten them to where they are. From a developing logo to a recognizable name, let’s dive into the defining moments that built the foundation of the Boston Fleet.
2023
The PWHL was announced in August of 2023, beginning with six inaugural teams, one of which was Boston. In September of 2023, the first PWHL draft took place. Alina Müller was the first player drafted for Boston. Also in September, Courtney Kessel was announced as head coach for the team.
2024
In January of 2024, the PWHL began its inaugural season. Boston had not yet been named, so through play of this first season, they were referred to as “PWHL Boston.” Their games were played at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Massachusetts, but a few games were played at the Agganis Arena in Boston. Their first win was 3-2 in overtime against Montreal on Jan. 13, and they would finish the season in 3rd place. They finished with a record of 8-4-3-9 (Wins, Overtime Wins, Overtime Losses, Losses). In the playoffs, Boston made it all the way to the Final of the Walter Cup, but unfortunately lost to Minnesota.
In November of 2024, the second season of the PWHL would begin. Boston was finally given its brand the month prior, being named the Fleet to honor the city’s maritime heritage, and the B crested as an anchor. The Fleet finished their second season with a record of 9-6-5-10 and landed in 5th place, which was not enough to send them to the playoffs.
2025
The prior season ended in May, with Minnesota winning for a second consecutive year. In June, head coach Courtney Kessel stated she was stepping down from her role. In July, the team announced Kris Spare to step into the Head Coach position. In October, the training roster was announced, and in November, the full season schedule was finally released. The home opener is set for Nov. 23 against Montreal at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Massachusetts. The team will play a multi-arena setup for the upcoming season, with most of the games set at the Tsongas Center, but some at Agganis Arena.
As the Fleet prepare for puck drop on another season, the evolution of the team mirrors even the growth of the league itself. Steady, ambitious, yet full of promise. Going from “PWHL Boston” to being a symbol of true New England sports, the Fleet has etched their place in Boston’s sports landscape. With a new coach, strong roster and passionate fan base, 2025 marks another chance to build upon this newly set legacy.
