Growing up, Elle St. Pierre spent her days in Montgomery, Vermont, on her family’s dairy farm. Every morning, she had tons of work to do with her parents, like throwing hay bales and milking cows before heading to school. Once she reached high school, St. Pierre attended Richford High and found her love for athletics once she joined the school’s Cross Country, Basketball and Track & Field teams.
She was named Vermont Gatorade Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Additionally, she held first-place finishes in the New England Cross Country Championships and Northeast Regional championships for the Nike Cross Nationals. All of this was achieved before even stepping onto the college track!
St. Pierre’s collegiate career began in 2013 when she attended the University of New Hampshire. She completed her studies in nutrition there in 2018. In her freshman year, she ran a 4:36 mile. The next year, she set a school record by running a 4:29.71 mile, which was also one of the top 10 fastest running times for a collegiate athlete. In 2016, she placed third in the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships. That same year, she achieved second place in the mile of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. In 2018, she won the title for the mile in the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships.
The mile wasn’t her only strong suit, as at UNH she also competed in the steeple. She won the national title in the 3000m steeplechase in 2014 and placed ninth in the World Junior Championships in Athletics. In the 2016 Division I Outdoor Championships, St. Pierre finished third, and that same year, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named her the Northeast Region Track Athlete of the Year.
After graduation, Elle St. Pierre signed with New Balance Club. A year later, she won the bronze medal in the two-mile race and placed sixth in the mile at the 2019 USA Indoor Championships. That same year, she raced in the 2019 USA Outdoor Championships, where she earned the bronze medal in the 5000m. That October, St. Pierre also competed in the World Championships, finishing in 11th place in the 5000m. At the 2020 Melrose Games, she broke the American record by achieving a 4:16.85 time in the mile. She also finished fourth in the 5000m of the USA Indoor Championships that year. While achieving all of these placements, St. Pierre married her now husband, Jamie St. Pierre!
Elle St. Pierre broke another record at the beginning of 2021! She ran an indoor two-mile in 9:10.28, becoming the new holder of the American record. In the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, held in 2021, she finished 10th in the 1500m. In 2022, she once again competed in both the USA Indoor Championships, the USA World Championship and the USA Outdoor Championships. However, she completed her races in the Outdoor Championships, earning the bronze medal, while pregnant!
The first major international competition she entered after having her first child was the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships, where she won gold and set another American record for the 3000m. In the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, she placed eighth in the 1500m, with a time of 3:57.52.
Recently, on Jan. 24, 2026, St. Pierre competed at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, Massachusetts, where she achieved the world-leading time of 8:26.54. She defeated Australia’s Linden Hall to take the win in the 3000m! This was her first race back after having her second child eight months ago! St. Pierre still runs a dairy farm with her family. Her Vermont life helped with her grit, tenacity, and motivation.
Elle St. Pierre is not just an Olympian. She is not just a record breaker. She is not just a runner. She is an inspiring mother who has proven that women can have it all!
