Boston Legacy fell 1-0 to the San Diego Wave on Friday night at Gillette Stadium.
The match opened with San Diego applying early pressure, controlling possession and pushing into Boston’s defensive third. Despite these challenges, Boston kept their back line organized, limiting the Wave’s chances. Both sides finished the opening 45 minutes at 0-0, with neither team able to find the back of the net.
Boston showed patience for buildup play, attempting to connect through the midfield and create opportunities for forward Aïssata Traoré. However, the Legacy struggled to generate shots on target against the Wave’s defense.
The breakthrough came in the 63rd minute. Wave midfielder Kimmi Ascanio sent a through ball into the box, where Brazilian forward Ludmila curled the ball into the net. The goal gave the Wave the lead 1-0.
From there, San Diego’s defense took full control. Boston pushed for an equalizer but was unable to register a single shot on goal. The Wave’s back line and goalkeeper Leah Freeman secured the shutout.
Statistically, the match was evenly played in many areas—both teams recorded eight total shots—but the difference came in efficiency, with San Diego putting three shots on target to Boston’s zero.
The result marked San Diego’s fourth consecutive win, continuing their strong early-season form, while Boston remained in search of their first points in their inaugural NWSL campaign.
Despite the loss, Boston’s defensive resilience and ability to keep the match within reach showed promise, but a lack of attacking production ultimately proved costly.
The Legacy’s next game is Saturday, April 25, as the NWSL heads into the International Games window.
