From Connecticut to Massachusetts, Gouveia is sharing her lacrosse talents with the Northeast!
For Stonehill College women’s lacrosse, the transition to Division I competition in the Northeast Conference has become a statement. Currently on a six-game win streak and sitting third in the NEC standings, the Skyhawks are proving they belong, and much of that momentum can be attributed to freshman midfielder Sophia Gouveia. In a season containing many changes, Gouveia has brought a sense of stability that’s helped elevate the entire program.
At 5-foot-9, the North Stonington, Connecticut native plays with a presence that makes it obvious she’s used to the pressure. Gouveia has quickly become a force in the midfield, impacting every phase of the game. She’s consistently found the back of the net with multiple hat tricks, including a career-high four-goal performance, while also setting up plays with multi-assist games.
Her performance in gameplay is no joke, and you can tell she’s the real deal just by looking at her stats! A 13-draw control performance at Mercyhurst and multiple games with four caused turnovers. Her ability to control possession and create extra opportunities has been invaluable, and it’s no surprise she’s been recognized as NEC Rookie of the Week five times already this season. From stepping up defensively to standing out offensively, she makes it seem like she’s played at this level for years.
There’s a certain composure in Gouveia’s game that reflects the larger identity Stonehill is building at the DI level. She doesn’t just step up in big moments; she expects to be the playmaker. That mindset has seamlessly aligned with a team that’s learning how to win, and doing so consistently. As the Skyhawks continue their push through NEC play, Gouveia stands as both a statement of their current success and a glimpse into what the future holds. In a season where Stonehill is turning heads, she’s not in the story; she’s writing it. There’s no doubt that Gouveia will be an exciting player to watch during her collegiate career.
Want to see the freshman playmaker live? Stonehill will next host Long Island University on Saturday, April 18, at 12 p.m.! This game will be streamed on NESN Nation and NEC Front Row!
