Fever Hold Off Sun Late in 85-75 Commissioner’s Cup Victory

Connecticut erases double-digit deficit, but Indiana pulls away behind Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham.

The Connecticut Sun continued to show signs of growth despite another close loss, falling 85-75 to the Indiana Fever on Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena.

In front of a sold-out crowd of 8,910 fans, the Sun battled one of the WNBA’s hottest teams for four quarters before Indiana closed the game on a decisive late run. The Fever improved to 8-5 on the season and earned their third consecutive victory, while Connecticut dropped to 2-13.

Indiana was led by Caitlin Clark, who finished with 25 points, five assists and three rebounds. Kelsey Mitchell added 19 points, while Aliyah Boston and Monique Billings also scored in double figures.

Despite the loss, Connecticut delivered one of its strongest defensive efforts of the season and remained within striking distance throughout the night.

Olivia Nelson-Ododa continued her recent strong play, recording 12 points and seven rebounds. The former UConn standout established herself early in the paint, helping Connecticut keep pace with Indiana’s high-powered offense. Guard Leila Lacan added 11 points and seven assists while taking on the difficult assignment of defending Clark for much of the evening.

The Sun came out aggressive for the opening tip. Connecticut shot over 60% from the floor in the first quarter and moved the ball efficiently, matching Indiana bucket for bucket. Although Clark scored eight early points, Connecticut’s offense kept the game close as the Fever carried only a narrow 30-29 advantage into the second quarter.

Indiana began to create separation in the second period. A lengthy scoring drought hurt the Sun as the Fever used a 13-0 run to build momentum. Connecticut struggled to convert around the rim and shot just 4-for-18 during the quarter, allowing Indiana to take a 47-38 lead into halftime.

The Sun refused to go away.

After Indiana extended its lead to 11 points in the third quarter, Nelson-Ododa sparked a Connecticut response with back-to-back baskets. The Sun tightened up defensively and gradually chipped away at the deficit, setting up a competitive fourth quarter.

Lacan and Saniya Rivers helped fuel Connecticut’s comeback effort. Rivers delivered several key defensive plays, including a highlight-reel block on Clark that energized the home crowd. The Sun’s defense forced 19 Indiana turnovers and generated 25 points off those miscues, keeping the game within reach.

Connecticut eventually erased much of the deficit and threatened to complete the comeback, but the Fever responded when it mattered most.

Sophie Cunningham scored Indiana’s final 11 points, knocking down timely shots and halting Connecticut’s momentum. Clark added a deep three-pointer in the closing minutes as Indiana regained control and secured the road victory.

For the Sun, the loss marked a fifth consecutive defeat, but it also highlighted the progress the team has made in recent weeks. Connecticut matched Indiana’s intensity for most of the night and once again proved capable of competing with one of the league’s playoff contenders.
