Sun Let First-Half Lead Slip in 101-97 Loss to Tempo

The Connecticut Sun looked to snap their losing streak Friday night, taking a lead into halftime against the Toronto Tempo.

Connecticut came out with energy from the opening tip, moving the ball effectively and attacking the paint to build an early advantage. The Sun carried a 50-37 lead into halftime and later pushed their lead to as many as 16 points in the third quarter, putting themselves in position to end their losing streak.

But the game changed when Mabrey caught fire.

Facing the franchise she played for in 2024 and 2025, Mabrey delivered the best performance of her career. The veteran guard poured in a career-high 37 points while tying the WNBA single-game record with nine three-pointers. She connected on 9-of-12 attempts from beyond the arc and scored an astonishing 21 points in the fourth quarter alone.

Every time Connecticut seemed poised to regain momentum, Mabrey answered. Whether it was a pull-up three in transition, a deep shot over a defender or a drive to the basket, the Tempo guard took over the game down the stretch and carried Toronto back from a deficit that once seemed insurmountable.

Toronto received plenty of help around Mabrey as well. Temi Fagbenle was nearly perfect from the floor, finishing with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Maria Conde added 19 points and six rebounds off the bench. The Tempo outscored Connecticut 64-47 in the second half to complete the comeback and snap a three-game losing streak.

Despite the loss, Connecticut had several bright spots offensively. Kennedy Burke led the Sun with 18 points off the bench, while Leïla Lacan and Brittney Griner each added 16 points. Olivia Nelson-Ododa chipped in 13 points as Connecticut finished with one of its stronger offensive performances of the season.

For the Sun, the defeat was another frustrating result in a season filled with close calls and missed opportunities. Connecticut showed significant improvement offensively and controlled much of the game, but the inability to slow Mabrey in the fourth quarter proved costly as the Sun dropped their seventh consecutive contest.

The Sun will now look to regroup before hosting the Chicago Sky on Sunday, while Toronto heads to Atlanta riding the momentum of one of the most impressive comeback victories in franchise history.
