Athlete of the week: Brittney Griner

Breaking another WNBA record this week, Griner is our Athlete of the Week.

Connecticut Sun center Brittney Griner is our athlete of the week after she added another historic milestone to her Hall of Fame resume on Monday night, becoming the WNBA’s all-time leader in blocked shots during Connecticut’s 92-63 victory over the Chicago Sky.

Griner entered the game needing four blocks to surpass the long-standing record of 877, which Margo Dydek set. She reached the milestone in the third quarter, recording the 878th block of her career and officially taking sole possession of first place on the league’s all-time list.

The achievement is the latest chapter in an already remarkable career for the 35-year-old. Since entering the league as the No. 1 overall pick in 2013, Griner has established herself as one of the most dominant defensive players in WNBA history, leading the league in blocks multiple times while earning numerous All-Star, All-WNBA, and Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Known for her elite rim protection, Griner also owns the WNBA single-game blocks record with 11, and holds several other shot-blocking marks that have defined her career. Her latest accomplishment further cements her legacy as one of the greatest defenders the sport has ever seen.
