How a local standout became the cornerstone of UMass women’s basketball and a leader in the Atlantic 10.
In a college basketball landscape crowded with big-name programs and blue ribbon recruits, some of the most compelling stories are found closer to home – in gyms where future stars first learned to play, the coaches who believed in them and the programs that gave them room to grow. Megan Olbrys of the University of Massachusetts women’s basketball team is one of those stories. A senior forward from Norwood, Massachusetts, Olbrys has blossomed into a mid-major standout, anchoring the Minutewomen with her scoring, rebounding, consistency and leadership throughout her career and now into the 2025-26 season.
Olbrys’ journey began in Norwood, Massachusetts, where she made her mark early as a dominant high school player. She finished her prep career scoring over 1,000 points, was named the 2022 Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Year and earned three Tri-Valley League MVP honors. She did all this while averaging 16.2 points, 11 rebounds and 4.1 steals per game as a senior. Her well-rounded game and local roots made her one of the state’s premier prospects.
After high school, Megan initially took her talents to Villanova University, where she spent two seasons and gained valuable experience in a major program. During her freshman year, she appeared in 25 games and shot over 50% from the field, and as a sophomore, she contributed in 18 games. These early collegiate years helped sharpen her skills against top-level competition and prepared her for the next step in her career.
In the spring of 2024, Olbrys transferred to UMass, joining a Minutewomen program eager to compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference and build a dynamic roster. From the moment she stepped onto the court in Amherst, her impact was immediate. As a junior in the 2024-25 season, Olbrys started all 32 games and led UMass in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.0 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, while logging more than 1,000 minutes of playing time. She also tallied eight double-doubles and led her team in total points (447) on the season. Her efficiency was notable, shooting over 52% from the field and adding valuable minutes in all phases of the game.
Her performances earned her Atlantic 10 Third Team All-Conference honors and multiple weekly accolades, including A-10 Player of the Week after a stretch in January where she averaged 21.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 blocks on an astounding 89.5% shooting from the field. That week included a dominant 22-point, 9-rebound outing and an equally efficient near-triple-double effort in the very next game, cementing her status as one of the conference’s elite.
Now a senior, Olbrys has taken that success into the 2025-26 campaign as one of UMass’ most experienced and influential players. Through early non-conference play, she’s been a driving force for the Minutewomen, recording a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds against ACC opponent Boston College. This performance is what powered a milestone win over the Eagles, the first for UMass since 2007. Her combination of interior toughness, scoring touch and rebounding prowess has become a staple of the Minutewomen’s identity on both ends of the floor.
Her all-around game is evident in the stat line: she’s consistently one of the team’s top scorers and rebounders, while also contributing defensively and in transition. According to early 2025-26 game logs, she’s averaging around 15 points and nearly 8 rebounds per game. She is doing this while shooting very efficiently, which is a testament to her continued development and versatility.
Olbrys’ impact extends beyond numbers. As a senior leader, she sets the tone in practice and games alike – mentoring younger players, anchoring the frontcourt and embodying the competitive spirit coach Mike Leflar emphasizes in his program. Her journey from a standout in a suburban Massachusetts town to a respected mid-major star in her home state underscores her growth both as an athlete and a person.
Her resume speaks to a player who’s not just productive but also reliable and resilient – someone who’s learned to maximize her opportunities and help guide her team through conference play and meaningful matchups. Moreover, her selection to the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Watchlist ahead of the 2025-26 season highlights her standing among the nation’s best mid-major talents.
As the Atlantic 10 season unfolds, UMass and its faithful fans will look to Olbrys to continue anchoring their offense and defense with poise and production. Her journey – from Norwood to Villanova to Amherst – reflects not just a decorated career, but a narrative of perseverance, leadership and steady excellence. For followers of New England women’s basketball, Megan Olbrys symbolizes the powerful impact a hometown talent can have when given the stage to grow, lead and shine.
Whether propelling a signature win or anchoring consistent efforts night in and night out, Olbrys’ story is one worth telling – a testament to hard work, home-grown roots and the relentless pursuit of basketball success.
