What To Watch This Weekend 4/17-4/19

A weekend watch guide to women’s sports across the Northeast.

This week in the Northeast includes college spring soccer games, professional hockey games and a big women’s boxing match. Not all games have confirmed time schedules for the public, but let me give you an easy reference guide as to what is coming up, when and how to catch it.

The spring women’s soccer games are starting in the Northeast, as we have Boston College participating in this. The spring game at Boston College provides spectators with an opportunity to see what the team will be like before the upcoming fall season. The games serve to evaluate various strategies, provide playing time for young players and test out different rosters, but they still showcase top-notch ACC play. This will be Saturday, April 18, in Chestnut Hill. The time is yet to be determined, but it will be between 12 and 4 p.m. ET.

The University of Connecticut is also doing the spring games, with the UConn spring exhibition matches being all about chemistry and assessing team depth before the season begins. They are not as organized as the fall matches, but are nonetheless filled with Division I speed and athletic play. These are great games to see for people who like college soccer. Exact date and time are still to be determined, but these games will be at Storrs.

On Friday, the Boston Fleet travel to Montréal. This is arguably among the best women’s hockey professional rivalries on this particular weekend. The market for Boston hockey teams remains one of the best in the entire league, while Montréal represents an extremely talented team with a very aggressive approach to their game. This matchup will be at 7 p.m.

Our final important matchup to watch this weekend is the Women’s World Championship Boxing Match that is being held at Madison Square Garden. It represents the increasing recognition that women’s boxing gets in terms of its coverage in high-profile venues through a championship match taking place in such an important venue for professional sports. The evening main card starts at 8 p.m. ET.

This weekend will be a combination of youth development and top-tier competition. The college soccer matches give you an up-close view of the developing talent in New England, whereas the PWHL match and the boxing championship match provide high-level competition. Despite the lack of a busy professional sporting schedule in the area, there is still a great list of female sporting events to watch.
