A female-run company? Check! On Cape Cod? Check! Sugar Surf is the perfect combination of sweet and salty!
Sugar Surf was founded in 2011 with one mission: “We want to get you in the ocean & share our surfing knowledge with you! Sugar Surf of Cape Cod is dedicated to creating a safe fun + effective surfing experience for people of all ages and skill levels.”

Dedicating her life to surfing and traveling, Katy Weeks found herself called back to the Cape Cod waves. Born and raised on the Cape, Weeks grew up surfing the Atlantic. Though she teaches on long boards, she prefers to ride monstrous waves on her short board.
Mackenzie Sisson, another native to Cape Cod, is a surf instructor with Sugar Surf. Sisson says she has been “surfing as long as she could stand up on her boogy board.” Her first ever board was a Hobie 6’4” square thruster with glass fins. Not only does she surf, but Sisson is a drummer, early childhood educator and personal trainer.
Surfing is a sport that takes concentration, balance and determination. If you want to be successful it’s important to get back up each time you fall. In order for lessons to be successful, “Sugar Surf Cape Cod instructors take a kind, patient and passionate approach to teaching you and getting you acquainted with the sport of surfing.”
Sugar Surf offers private, two-person and group lessons as well as five day camps. All lessons are held at Marconi Beach, where they provide wetsuits and boards for each attendee. The schedule depends on the tide since the lesson takes place at low tide only. Truly, the only thing learners need to bring is a bathing suit and sunscreen!
Weeks and Sisson held a Girls Surf Camp this past July. A group of young girls came together to learn the art of the sea. As posted on the Sugar Surf Instagram, “The waves challenged us, but they rose to the occasion and surfed with confidence, determination and huge smiles. Watching everyone encourage each other and push past their comfort zones was the best part. So proud of this crew—it was an unforgettable week!” A female ran business and the encouragement of the women is exactly what creates the welcoming atmosphere that Sugar Surf holds.
Though there is no physical building for the lessons themselves, there is the Sugar Shack. This is their store on Brackett Road in Eastham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Here you can purchase merchandise and surf supplies so you are ready to take on the surf.

The talent and love shown by the two surfers has made an incredible difference for many. On their website, Weeks and Sisson state, “We wake up each day with waves on our mind, and we know you’ll be hooked soon too.” I can attest to that statement! Personally, I took lessons with Sugar Surf alongside my siblings and my cousins. The experience is one we will never forget, and now, we still return to Marconi Beach to surf and enjoy getting lost in the waves.
