The Unequal Pay Gap Between Women's and Men's Sports

Understanding the financial inequality surrounding the world of women’s sports.

In most sports, women earn less than men. It’s one of the most visible differences in gender inequality. Despite the growing popularity of women’s sports, women earn significantly less than their male counterparts. The real issue isn’t about who has more talent; it’s about their value and investment within the game.

In the WNBA, the average player earns around $120,000; meanwhile, NBA players take home over $9 million. The Las Vegas Aces guard Jackie Young is the highest-paid athlete in the WNBA, earning $252,450 annually. NBA superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has the highest annual salary at approximately $73.1 million. There is a $72.8 million gap.

The U.S. Women’s National Team had a multiyear legal battle to get equal pay. Despite winning multiple World Cups and other major tournaments in which the men’s side had not done so, it took them a long time to settle for equal pay. This example just shows that no matter what the women achieved, they aren’t rewarded equally as men are.

Many people defend the pay gap by saying that men generate more revenue; however, women can’t compete if there is hardly any funding or media coverage. Many female athletes work second jobs to support themselves and their families, which can cause burnout.

Progress is still being made, as equality in the pay gap requires support, fair investment and the recognition that they deserve to have. Ending this pay gap isn’t about just the money; it’s about having respect and equality.
